This morning I was listening to the radio and they were speaking with the country singer, Kelly Pickler. Normally, I flip talk radio because I’m never really interested in what the DJ talks about. However, since I think Kelly is adorable and I like her music, I decided to tune in. After gushing about her recent engagement, the DJ brought up how some recent tabloids were saying she has gotten fat in the past few months. The DJ was more than complementary about her looks (thank goodness), but Kelly expressed her hurt feelings on the matter. Comments like those made her second guess getting on stage and doing what she loves! I guess the standards for the celebrity image are impossible to live up to, even for a celebrity!
If it’s so difficult to maintain the celebrity image as a celebrity, shouldn’t these standards change? What is it going to take for the public to accept all body types, shapes, and sizes? What is it going to take for us to accept ourselves?? Why do we have to feel so inadequate?
In order to truly honor your health, you must accept and love who you are! Even if you are a size 2, if you got there by exercising to complete exhaustion daily and eating next to nothing, are you really honoring your health? Do you really love who you are?
Or how about the flip side? If you stop at the drive thru every day and have high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc, is that really honoring your health?
I think we all need to take a step back and re-evaluate what it means to be healthy. Health is about balance. Don’t let any ONE thing go to the extremes; avoid over and under eating OR exercising and while we all have to work…definitely make time to play! Life will be so much happier!
My message is simple: be kind to yourself, love who you are, and honor your health.
- Remember: Eat for HEALTH first! There will be little room for much else!
- Keep practicing at eating mindfully. Even though it’s hard to break certain habits, with time, you WILL get there!
- Eat like a toddler.
- No foods are “off limits.”
- You have to move it to LOSE IT! FIDGET-CIZE daily!
- YOU ARE MORE THAN WHAT YOU WEIGH! Don’t forget that!!
Thanks to Caitlin from The Healthy Tipping Point for promoting such a positive movement and be sure to check out her NEW Operation Beautiful Book!

Fantastic message and reminder – it is so hard to avoid the comparison trap when we’re constantly seeing images and getting “tips” about how to be better, thinner, more successful, more fabulous. Your tips make a heck of a lot more sense!
No way she’s fat! she’s so pretty and healthy looking girl!
[...] Honor Your Health by Ignoring Celebrity Standards! [...]
I saw this story in the gossip mags and I was like “SAY WHA?!” I think Kelly Pickler is absolutely gorgeous…and certainly NOT fat!
Unfortunately, in the tabloids we see all these celebrities constantly being derided for being too fat or too skinny. It doesn’t leave much hope for the average woman. That critical mentality is passed on subconsciously and creates self-criticism and doubt. Totally agree that we need to spread the message of self-acceptance and finding a balance and love for our unique bodies–instead of trying to find the “perfect weight” or “dress size.” Great post!
These are wonderful tips! (As always) It can be hard to not compare ourselves, but I love your notion of honoring YOUR own health.
What an important message. We need to stop focusing so much on what the world tells us our bodies should look like, and start listening to what our bodies tell us we need to do to be healthy and strong. Your site is always such an inspiration to me!
Beautiful message! And I love how you apply it not only to people who overexercise and undereat, but to those who underexercise and overeat as well. We have to treat our bodies well, because without health, there’s no happiness or life. My only concern used to be exercising as much as I could, and eating as little as I could… and I definitely didn’t end up in a good place; mentally or physically. After being robbed of my health, my only concern and desire became to get it back, and now, I just really want to make sure that I keep it.
In nobody’s imagination is Kelly Pickler fat! Sheesh. That’s awful, what the media was saying about her.
I’m still working on loving myself for who I am. Sometimes it’s a struggle, but I’m getting there. =)
“My message is simple: be kind to yourself, love who you are, and honor your health.” >>>> Sounds like the perfect message to me
Kelly Pickler was being labeled as fat?! She’s not even close! The media annoys the hell out of me, especially when they try to call celebrities fat when they obviously aren’t. Talk about sending a horrible message to all the easily influenced adolescents.
Hell if the world thinks Kelly Pickler is fat then they must think I am a huge cow!
I love how you mentioned unhealthy eating/exercising on both sides of the spectrum. Great post!!
I can’t imagine what it would be like to be in the public eye and have someone scrutinizing your body all the time!
Thank you for this. I have always hated how celebrities are called fat if they weigh more than 100lbs. I feel like there is no safe ground for them. Either they are being called anorexic or fat. Obviously there is middle ground and being skinny doesn’t make you anorexic and weighing 130 pounds doesn’t make you fat!
I couldn’t agree more! it’s all about balance and knowing WHAT your eating for–not an image, but to live life! Love it.
You are so right. The media standards are through-the-roof ridiculous! We can all do ourselves a favor and just ignore them!
This is an excellent, excellent post!!
I agree. Being healthy involves taking care of your mental and emotional needs as well. You can’t have one without the other for optimal health and happiness.

I love this post. Kelly is FAR from fat, good grief, she looks fantastic!
I loved your reminder to keep all things in balance, eating, exercise, relaxation, work, etc.
I agree with Tina who wrote that a message of health instead of beauty (and thinness) needs to be more widespread.
OMG – I´m in love with your blog! Very mindful and informative posts – I especially love the “eat like a toddler” approach! So true!
Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog and drawing my attention to yours
Have a great day!
xoxo Mel
That’s so ridiculous…Kellie is adorable! I’m working on loving myself more…NOW. Not 5 pounds less from now. It’s hard, but I can feel myself getting there
Love this post!
People tend to forget happiness is also a crucial part of your overall health. And I can imagine there are not too many people who are completely happy as the constantly worry about “fitting into” a certain image or size. Once I got over my obsession about the number on the scale, I started to feel so much better overall!
They are calling her FAT in that picture. Oh my goodness! How ridiculous. She has a great body.
And I really hope the message of taking care of yourself for health instead of beauty becomes more and more widespread.
