Fail.

Last night my dinner was a major FAIL. I was so disappointed that I had no motivation to even take a picture of my mess. What happened?

Earlier in the week I found a new recipe for a whole wheat pizza crust! I love making homemade pizza, so I could not wait to try it out! I had some feta on hand, kalamata olives, spinach, and fresh tomatoes, so I was excited to make a Mediterranean style pizza!

This was the type of pizza I was envisioning; beautifully risen crust, lots of toppings, and a warm, chewy bite!

I pre-made the dough on Sunday afternoon and kept it chilled in the fridge for later in the week. We pulled it out last night and turned on the oven to a low temp to let the dough rise in a warm spot for 45 minutes. However, instead of rising, the dough formed a hard film (like it had started baking) and by the time I actually baked it (thinking this might fix it), it was literally hard as a rock.

This is something similar to what I ACTUALLY achieved. Not as bad as the picture...it wasn't burnt but it looked just as unappetizing!

I was so upset that I lost my appetite and started to do my yoga work out. I just didn’t want to deal with it anymore. Brandon got frustrated because HE was hungry and ordered a pizza. I was fine with it but my appetite still wasn’t  normal. I could manage only 1/2 a piece…which is odd for me. Does that ever happen to you? Losing your appetite because you were upset over something? (Don’t worry I did get hungry around 9:30pm and ate a bowl of cereal!!)

The pizza Brandon ordered....

So I have nothing for you today!! I’m sorry!! But I would love to hear about any recipe disasters you have made to cheer me up!!

QUESTIONS:

1. What was your biggest recipe disaster?

2. What food do you quickly turn to when a recipe turns out poorly?

  • [...] week I discussed how my pizza crust recipe was a complete flop and I got so many comments with words of encouragement or personal stories, that I felt much better. [...]

  • Oh we’ve definitely had our nights of tossing food in the garbage and having to order out instead!

  • It doesn’t happen often, but I’ve definitely dumped entire dinners. It’s so frustrating that I lose my appetite completely (even if I was starving just prior to the fail.) And by the way, homemade pizza crust is one of those things I’ve dumped. Even now that I have a “tried and true” dough recipe, it still can come out bad at times. There is something about putting it in the refrigerator… doesn’t work for me.

Oh GRRR!!! I hate that when a recipe fails and have certainly had my share of them over the years. One time I made a fantastic quiche for a date (this is MANY years ago before I met my husband) and the recipe was fine, except I dropped it on the floor. :) EPIC fail for the cook there! Chin up, and have a good rest of the day!!!

  • I’m sorry to hear about your pizza! This wasn’t my biggest fail ever, but I was seriosly upset about it! I was making cake balls (so not healthy) for my husband to take with him to work for a holiday party, and I somehow totally toasted it. Our oven cooks things a little faster than a normal oven, but that day it was like a turbo oven. I totally charred the cake, and had to go back to the store for a whole new box! Serves me right for cheating and using a box! :)

  • I have my share of kitchen disasters! I once made roasted eggplant so tough it was like roasted rubber :p I’ve also set the fire alarm off multiple times hehe. I do sometimes lose my appetite but like you, after a few hours I get hungry haha. Don’t feel too bad about your pizza, cooking is part trial and error, and we can all learn from our mistakes! Plus it makes the kitchen more interesting :)

  • Hmm, I know I’ve had major fails but can’t think of any specific example. Seems to me they usually involve chicken breasts, though. LOL. Around here, we usually turn to eggs and toast.

  • So funny!! I had a homemade pizza FAIL a few weeks ago too!!

  • Awww, I am so sorry :(

When Michael and I first moved in together. I decided to cook a dinner one of my clients old me they made that sounded delish. I was still eating chicken at the time. It was chicken sauteed in white wine with some spinach. I made the dish, and Michael went to bite into it…and he spit it out and had the most disgusted look on his face. I used white wine VINEGAR by accident…and a lot of it!! Whoops!!!! Totally ruined our dinner, I went in the bedroom crying (because back then this was a VERY sensitive subject–his family always would call him and ask about my cooking, it was so obnoxious). I lost my appetite, and he ordered a pizza too!

  • aww im so sorry to hear about the pizza fail :(
Yes – i lose my appetite when I get upset. I am the opposite of a stress eater.

  • Oh, I know exactly what you mean. I lose my appetite all the time when something upsets me..which I guess is better than turning to food when your upset but it’s still annoying because I want to eat, just can’t. Too bad the pizza crust didn’t turn out..but just try again! :)

  • Oh no! When I’m upset, my hunger actually increases. I probably would have finished about half the pizza!

  • Awww, sorry to hear about your pizza crust! That has happened to me before too…dough is tricky like that! My go-to meal on these nights is usually a veggie omelet…quick, easy, and delicious! :)

  • Sorry about your pizza crust! I worked at a pizza shop and the dough can just be tricky sometimes!! I have failed a lot when trying to cook or bake but mostly I find that those failure taste just as good as what I wanted to make :D I fail the most on pie crusts, I don’t know why!!

  • My interest in food either skyrockets or declines a lot when I’m upset- I guess it depends on what it is! Hope your day is going better!

  • Oh girl…I’m so sorry. I get so frustrated when my recipes don’t work out. I made a delicious chocolate bundt cake last spring, but I turned it out too early and the whole thing fell apart. I cried! When I have a dinner fiasco, I usually turn to something simple like an omelet with whole wheat toast and almond butter. Easy, comfort foods always help!

  • Lose your appetite? What’s that? Never happened to me before ;)

    I haven’t had a Fail that I couldn’t fix recently…unless microwave popcorn counts ;)

  • Meg

Don’t be too hard on yourself. I can relate feeling kind of defeated by something that I’m supposed to be good at. I think to cook is to fail at times and then we can learn from our mistakes!

  • i have had a couple food fails too. it’s totally ok! happens to the best of us. at least we’re in the kitchen trying, ya know? and when that happens, you KNOW i go to chickfila.

  • Aw, girlie, give youreself a break- kitchen mishaps happen… it’s how you learn :) Although to me, it sounds like a great idea I should utilize to get out of cooking dinner ;)

  • I feel ya sista! I have failed THREE times trying to make my own whole wheat crust!! So frustrating! But you can’t let it bring u down, I plan (fingers crossed) to try it again soon, I will not be defeated!! haha Anyways…to answer your question, yes I get embarrassingly upset when a meal fails and lose my appetite, but like you, it quickly comes back to me :) What can I say, I love food!!

  • I don’t often lose my appetite but I hate it when I have an idea to make something and it doesn’t turn out as I’d hoped. I had breakfast for dinner last night and the omelette didn’t flip properly and the turkey bacon was a little too crisp but I forced myself past it, even managed to take a few pics and ate it anyway.

  • Crappy!

I had really bad luck with a batch of peppermint bark last year. The white chocolate got all discolored, I’m pretty sure the dark chocolate was burnt, and it was just an overdone mess!

With dinner fails, I’ll often turn to a pb sandwich or just cereal… no fuss!

  • I have definitely had my fair share of recipe fails! On Christmas I messed up a linzertorte TWICE (finally got it the the try…all in the same day! perfectionist? yep!). I’ve burned countless things in the oven etc etc. In other words, I feel your pain! Haha. But major props to you for trying homemade pizza dough! I think that’s one of the toughest foods to make! And more props for sharing the fail…It at least makes a good story, right? :-)

  • That is so frustrating, especially when you spend a lot of time on making something! That is why I am afraid of yeast lol

  • Lauren

I make muffins all the time, and I’m constantly trying new combinations. One time I put flax seed, peanut butter, and bananas in a batch and it turned out pretty bad… Nothing disastrous, but nobody else would eat them!

  • If I let my dough rise in the oven, I preheat it to 200F first then shut it off and open the oven door for a couple of minutes before I put my dough inside and close the oven door.

  • Aw sorry to hear about the fail! I tried to make biscotti once which turned out horribly and tasted like I imagine cardboard with a few dried apricots on it would taste. Yuck. If I have a dinner fail, I usually turn to steamed veggies and tuna with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Simple and kind of odd, but it’s fast and amazingly delicious!
