Food MATTERS.

Brandon and I watched an incredible film over the weekend entitled, Food Matters.”  The message:

“Let thy food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be thy food”  Hippocrates.

I ask anyone who is a regular reader of The Healthy Apron to watch this film and share it with family and friends. We need to educate ourselves. If we are going to change the view society has of food, then we have to pass along the message to as many people as we can; that food should be used not only to nourish our bodies, but to HEAL our bodies, and that can only be done through a diet rich in organic foods grown from the Earth.

I honestly believe that God gave us every food we need to keep ourselves well, we just have to choose to eat those foods in the way He intended.

I added a brief clip of this video and I hope it intrigues you enough to run out and rent a copy.

  • I am so going out this week and renting this movie. I loved the clip. Thanks Erin! Your blog is so informative even to a dietitian herself :)

  • I can’t watch the video (blocked at work), boo! But I have not seen the film, but want to! I agree with your statemetn 100% which is why I don’t believe in omitting food groups. But that’s just me!!

  • I’ve seen lots of “food movies” but hadn’t heard of this one until tonight! I’d definitely like to watch the entire thing!

I agree 100% that it’s imperative that we become more mindful of our food and how it’s affecting our body. Not sure I agree with the recommendation to eat 50% of foods raw, but it’s definitely an interesting philosophy!

I’m going to go and rent this! Thanks for sharing the “trailer”. Have a great week.

  • I haven’t seen Food Matters yet, but I do have it on my Netflix instant queue. Glad to hear something about it. Now I’m even more excited to see it!

Yes, I also have seen this movie. I enjoyed hearing the importance of eating organic: “51% of all meals should be produce”…love it! I also thought the importance of vitamins for people who were depressed and alcoholics was interesting. I think about the students I teach and watch what they eat for lunch…ketchup as a vegetable. No wonder we have so many students on meds. Their only meals are the school’s which at times offer no fresh fruits or vegetables because of the cost.

I tried watching Food Inc. but was so grossed out. There are a ton of chicken houses in my area (most of which are Perdue farms- a Perdue plant is about 30 minutes from my house). I had no idea what was going on in those houses. It really made me think even more about what I am eating.

  • Is this based on the book? I read the book of the same title and loved it!

  • I haven’t seen it but really want to! My co-worker and I were just talking about Food, Inc. This looks like something I have to rent.

  • Oooh this sounds interesting! I hadn’t heard of it before now but you’ve certainly got me curious. Like some of the others have already said, I agree that food SHOULD be used to heal, and can be just as/if not more effective than the medications and pills that western cultures have become so reliant on over the years.

  • Looks so good! I wish more people would view food, not pills as medicine, or food as prevention for major diseases.

  • Wow, very interesting! I had no idea about cooking your foods and what it our body does to fight against it! I want to watch the rest!! :)

Definitely an interesting movie, but totally impractical. After seeing this, I wanted to find more about the Gerson Therapy. Another interesting idea, but maybe even more impractical that growing all your own organic food. Coffee enemas? Really? A good first step would be to require nutritional training for doctors. Amazing to me that its not part of their cirriculum.

  • Just added it on Netflix!

  • That is my favorite quote ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

They use a lot of those quotes in Forks Over Knives (which gets released next month!). I NEED to see Food Matters. We need to get that instant Netflix thing so I can rent it. Thanks for talking about it today!!!

  • Adding this to the Netflix queue! Thanks for the recommendation. Have you seen Food, Inc? If not, I recommend that as well.

I haven’t seen that, but it definitely looks interesting!

  • It’s in my netflix Queue! Since you love it i’m now uber excited to watch it =)

  • They have this on Netflix Instant Play. I put on it one night and fell asleep :( I was really tired though so maybe I’ll have to give it another try!

  • Thanks for posting this. I AM going to run out and rent it! But I’m the “choir” on this. I just don’t understand how people can live with chronic illnesses (or any health condition) and not ask themselves, “Hmmm, maybe I should change what I eat?” Why would people prefer to take pills? I guess it’s easier in the short term???

  • wow thanks for sharing this!! now im dying to see the rest!

  • Yes, I’ve seen Food Matters. I like how they stressed how vitamins are essential, there are other options than just relying on “the pill,” and that they emphasize the importance of fruits and vegetables. :)
