For the average American, life revolves around food. On any given day, whether shopping, cooking, or entertaining, food seems to be the focal point. However, when you take your focus OFF food because it has been derailing your weight-loss or causing illness, it’s hard to know what to do with yourself. How can you be expected to make fried chicken for everyone else and then sit there and eat a salad? Life suddenly seems to have a big empty void.
So how can you make life easier on yourself when you are trying to be healthier around others? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to that question, as you are always going to be presented with situations where food is the center of an event. Just keep in mind that you still have the power to take charge of ANY situation; you just have to be willing to use it!
These are a few of my suggestions:
- Let someone else bring the goodies to a party so you can get out of the way of temptation at home.
- Contribute a healthy dish to your family cook out, so you know there will be something good for you to munch on.
- Instead of meeting a friend for coffee (and a muffin), why not meet at the park and go for a walk?
- Try NEW foods! Healthy eating is not all about salads! Experiment with recipes! You might surprise yourself and others!
- Encourage your family to get healthy as well! Why should YOU be the only one making positive changes?
There’s no time like the present. Make healthy choices starting today! Challenge yourself to be your BEST SELF! YOU CAN DO IT! And while you’re at it, be the influence in other people’s lives as well!

These are great tips! It is so true, it seems like EVERYTHING revolves around food. So instead of meeting my friends for drinks or going out to dinner with my BF we do active things like go for a run, play hockey, go for a walk, etc.
I like planning gym and whole foods dates with my friends instead of nights out
I always bring the healthy dish to the parties! =) and I totally agree with all these tips! <3 yay!
What a motivational post!!!
I usually like to bring something healthy to a family gathering like you said. I have been doing this since high school because there is always unhealthy desserts and food around then!
I love trying new foods and recipes. I can’t tell you how many ‘new’ foods have become my favorites. Experimenting is fun!
awesome post!! And healthy living is definitely addicting. I love connecting with others too that feel the same way I do!
YES! great ideas!! i especially love the one about not going for coffee but taking a walk!!
I love what you say about telling others to be healthy/or encouraging them. So many people feel like sore thumbs for being healthy when really they can be the inspiration for someone else.
Awesome post! I think I challenge myself every day to be my best self…it’s a challenge!
Well said!
It does feel like my life revolves around food
Great ideas to change that up!
Great message! Healthy food is so much more than just salads! I really like inviting friends to run or exercise with me because it encourages others to stay healthy & motivates me to workout.
Great post
I like to bring a really healthy side to parties because then I know there will be something I can eat. As for desserts, I’m really weird in that anything I bake, I am not tempted to eat because I *know* can make it again. But if other people make it, I fear it’s the last time I will ever have the chance to eat it and go overboard.
I met a fellow blogger for a run yesterday! Was great! Love sharing similar interests and meeting new friends.
Also- I made it my goal to learn a new veggie each month that I’ve never cooked before! Next up Fennel and after that Beets!
I plan manicure or pedicure dates instead of coffee dates.
I like going out with a friend to the park instead of going to grab lunch. Our society is definitely food driven!
I like the idea of not making desserts. I’m the queen of cookie dough eating.
