Before Heather takes it away with her awesome guest post, I just wanted to give you all a little Hawaiian photo op! We are having a blast!’

Hey hey Healthy Apron readers! I’m Heather from Get Healthy with Heather and I’m super excited to be here today. I’m sure Erin’s out in the sun having fun with her husband and she should! Lucky gal!
Erin asked me to talk about one healthy habit I do every day and the first thing that came to mind was walking. I never used to be a walker. I’d always run, lift weights, do yoga and exercise DVDs, sometimes even bike or hike, but I never really thought of walking as exercise.
Last fall I read an article titled Sentenced to the Chair (you can read more about it here) and it was that article that made me realize that I need to get up off my butt more throughout the day.
While I exercise either in the early morning or evening at a pretty intense pace, the remainder of the day is done sitting at a desk staring at the computer. While I can’t really do too much about that, I realized I could change my activity up a bit.
I began taking my morning and afternoon breaks and started walking during those 15 minutes. I got a co-worker of mine to join in too and the group just kept growing. Every day around 10am and 3pm we go on our walks. For me it’s rain or shine… others are fair weather walkers. There have only been a few days I’ve missed one of my walks because of meetings, but I can probably count them on my hand if I tried.
Not only do I get to move more throughout the day, I get a mental break from work. The fresh air, although full of rain most of the time, is awakening and a total de-stressor.
I ran my 3rd half marathon in January and it was the first one that I’ve done with no injuries or major pains during training. Could it be because of the walking? I think it definitely helped!
What I love about walking is that it’s free, you don’t need any fancy equipment and just about anyone can do it. Plus, it’s a great activity to do while catching up with a friend.
Do you walk or take breaks at work? You should!
I’d love to hear what you do each day to clear your head and move more. Feel free to head on over to Get Healthy with Heather and share what you do to stay healthy or just to say hi!
Thanks for reading!

Gorgeous photos, Erin! I’m so happy you’re enjoying yourself! The sleeping giant turtle is AMAZING–wow!
If I could walk everywhere, I would. Love it. Not only does it provide good exercise, but it clears my mind and de-stresses me. Some of my best thinking is done while walking!
I LOVE WALKING!! I walk my dog pretty much everyday! its seriously amazing!
Oh my gosh that sea turtle photo is awesome!!! Looks like you’re having a blast!
Oh your vacation looks amazing!!! I am so glad you are having fun!
Oh my goodness did you really get tatted???
I’d love to do a muddy 5K..looks like fun!
Glad you’re having fun in Hawaii! Walking is great, and it’s exercise everyone can do. I always walk around campus instead of taking the bus, and most of the time, I’ll walk for 5-10 minutes after my running to keep moving and get my heart rate down.
You are such a lucky girl Erin — I have to admit I’m feeling a teensy weensy bit envious
I need to take more breaks during the day to get away from my computer screen. Taking a quick walk around the block is a great idea! Thanks for the inspiration.
Looks like you’re having a great time Erin!! And awesome guest post Heather. I think the best kind of fitness is the kind that doesn’t even feel like work. I love hiking and am hoping to get out to do some this summer! As for breaks from my desk at work, I really need to do it more often. Sitting for hours on end makes me so grumpy!
