Don't Fear the Fat!

Hi everyone!! My name is Carrie and a run a little blog called Moves ‘N Munchies.. I’m super excited to be writing a guest post for Erin- her blog ROCKS, which is why you guys are all reading this right now!

Today I’m going to talk to you about the F word... I know, its the ‘forbidden’ word, but you know what? I don’t give a HOOT-

oh wait… I’m not talking about that F word… C’mon guys lets keep this G rated…

I’m talking about the big ol’ FAT word… I LOVE FAT, yup I said it.. and it’s pretty darn true!

First lemme make something clear here…

mmkay.. glad that’s straightened out!

I HATE how fat is shunned upon in our society because people link it to mean overweight when in actual fact, it’s the same thing as saying carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, lipids- the elements of food!

Fat is essential for our bodies to function, just as proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and much more are….

Fat helps our bodies to absorb vitamins, regulate those hormones, AND it makes our skin and hair all nice and SHINY- yay!

So basically, fat rocks.

THAT said, there are a few types of fats that ain’t the bestest- but hey, simple carbs aren’t the bestest either, so there are pros and cons to all!

GOOD fats= monounsaturated (nuts, nut oils, avocado, olives, olive oil etc..), Polyunsaturated fats (seeds, walnuts, peanuts, fish),

NOT SO GOOD FATS: trans fats, saturated fats

Okay, that’s it for lesson time….

The REAL point of this post is to tell you about one thing that I do/eat daily to stay healthy.. and that is… yep, you guessed it.. eat fats!!

If you guys don’t know me… I am actually a vegan- ow ow– shoutout to all my vegan homies out there ;)

Being a vegan means I don’t eat dairy, meat, or anything that comes from an animal… and honestly it wasn’t until I switched to veganism that I discovered how flippin amazing fats are!!!!!

I even created my own acronym just to show everyone how much fats mean to me:

Fats and Me

Are always

Together…….and Forever…but FATF wouldn’t work

I eat fats on a DAILY basis… I’d say 30-35% of my daily calories come from fats (recommend in the US is 20-30%) so I totally rock that boat.

I’m telling you guys- fats give you ENERGY, SATIETY, SMOOTH HAIR and SKIN, JOY!

I always make sure to eat a fat at every meal and every snack! And if I miss it at one meal.. you betcha I’ll be diggin’ into that peanut jar later that day!

Show and tell time?

can you say LOVE??

What I want you all to get out of this post is…

DO NOT, I REPEAT… DO NOT FEAR THE FATS!!!

SERIOUSLY- have you ever noticed how those ‘flat belly foods’ are all FATS- yep… avocado, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanut butter…. just sayin’!

So if you’re looking for that six-pack- GO GET YO’SELF A SPOONFUL OF PEANUT BUTTER!

So lessons of the day:

1.Fats= food

2. Carrie loves fats

3. Go eat some peanut butter

Questions of the Day:

Do you or have you ever feared fats? Not anymore, Mister!

Favorite fat source? peanut butter- le duh!

  • This was AWESOME!!!! I absolutely LOVE fats!! :)

  • Great post! Even though I know they are good fats I still feel like I need to stay away from them, like not having those nut butters as much as I would like. I am getting better though!!

  • I DRINK FAT… salmon fat or any fish fat – oh so good! I lick the pan that I cook fish on… drip the pan drippings in my mouth or over my meal. Delish! ha ha.

  • I definitely feared fats during my ED days- I was all about low fat when I did it. Now, I can’t get enough!

  • I love this post because I wasn’t getting enough fats daily until I started to see a nutritionist. I always thought I was getting enough throughout the day but I wasn’t. I love getting my fats through nuts and avocados.

  • I don’t fear the fats, bring it ;)

  • Fats, fats fats. I love fats! No fear of fats from this chick!
    Gimme the peanut butter :D

  • FATS ARE MY FRIENDS!! :D Peanut butter to the rescueeee!!

Great post! I really needed to read this right now. The point that you made about fat not meaning overweight, and the fact that eating fat will not make you “fat” really hit home We wouldn’t say “do these jeans make me look protein?” so why do we use fat in that way?

Saturated fats are actually pretty healthy. They’re the kind our bodies stores fat as. So when you eat more calories than you need, you store it as mono and saturated fats. We do this all the time, then use this stored energy as fuel. Polyunsaturated fats oxidize readily though because of their double carbon bonds. Omega 6 is also proinflammatory. One of the main problems with the american diet is the imbalance of omega 3/ and omega 6. Check your ratio. Without fish, you’ll be getting tons and tons of O6 and not nearly enough O3. And have you seen all the new studies coming out on omega 3? There is literally one every day.

  • There is actually no proof to state that saturated fats are bad for heart health! It shocked me when I found that out but saturated fat is actually one of the GOOD fats. Give this a read: http://www.thatsfit.ca/2010/02/26/saturated-fat-not-bad-for-the-heart/

  • This is awesome! I love the first pic! the fat = , etc. so true! and they really do help with energy levels and hair! <3

    I'm lovin the munchie collage!

  • Brilliant post! I had a conversation today with the bloke who runs Rude Health and he said anything that says “low-fat” should almost always be avoided – so true!

  • I love you Carrie!
And I NOW love and do not fear fats.
So I think this is the perfect post :)
I can’t wait til my hair gets it’s thickness back from all this pb I’m eating!
    <3
P.s. the lessons cracked me up ^_^

  • Great post Carrie! Fats are great – nuts, avocados, healthy oils, you are right, my hair and skin is soo much better since I´ve started eating more healthy fats. If only people weren´t so against fats! Has anyone ever been against protein?! No, I don´t think so:)

  • great guest post girl!

  • Jessica

I think the majority of people really need to be educated on the difference between healthy and unhealthy fats and how some “low fat” foods really are not nearly as good for you as other alternatives… one example.. skim milk 0 fat, 12 sugars, 30% calcium almond milk(unsweetened vanilla) 2.5g fat, 0 sugars, 45% calcium

…by removing fat, you have to add sugar and others ingredients that aren’t as healthy… aka good fats are our friends and fuel our body throughout the day!

    Thanks for the great post!

  • Love this post AND fats! Especially peanut butter. You put it so well in this post. And yay for veganism :)

  • Amen to that girlie! I used to try to cut out fat as much as possible. Now I make sure to have some at every meal and snack! Me and nut butters=love! <3

  • I definitely used to fear the fats (low fat anything would grace my shopping cart). But now I can’t live without peanut butter or any kind of nut for that matter. And I really think that it has helped me with my skin and hair problems. I do embrace the fat! :-)

  • Carrie, your posts are always so funny to read! I love fats, especially avocado fats!

  • I love fats! But I definitely used to be afraid of them….so glad thats changes, because I lurrrrve nut butters.

  • For years I used to avoid fats like the plague. I can’t believe how stupid a low fat diet is now – I never felt satisfied, my skin was dry and I was constantly cold. I feel so much better now there are nuts and other healthy oils in my life.

  • Great post! I just had some celery with a healthy dose of almond butter in your honor :o )

  • Mmm, nuts, olive oil, nut butter… fats probably are my favorite food group! I enjoyed your picture explanation of fats not meaning “overweight.” Fats really do have a negative connotation in American society. Walk around the grocery store and you see so many things proclaiming FAT FREE, but then you have to wonder, what sketchy ingredients did they replace the fat with?

  • MHMMM I love your lessons for the day!! I’m eating peanut butter (actually, sunflower seed butter!) right now for like my fifth breakfast this morning..haha no joke! love love love fats though and couldnt agree more with her post:)

  • great post carrie! now i believe it’s time for some peanut butter-topped-pancakes for breakfast (:

  • Hahaa I love the acrostic. FATF! I also love the pictures you put together at the very top. I was about to say “Fats are friends, not food!” but then I realized that was wrong. Fats are friends, AND food!

  • To be honest, I used to be fat-phobic as part of my disordered eating.
Now, though, while I may glance at the fat content of my food, it is not a determining factor (except for trans and saturated when we aren’t talking about coconut). I have jar after jar of nut butters in my cupboards and probably open one of those babies AT LEAST once a day.
Since I’ve started incorporating more fats into my diet my hair has been growing in thicker, my nails are less brittle, AND I’m getting a pretty rocking set of abs for the first time in my life!

  • [...] guys!!!! just poppin in to ask you to pweez check out a guest post I did over at thehealthyapron all about my LOVE FOR FATS! the prompt was to talk about something I do everyday to stay healthy and [...]

  • Thank you for this post :) LOVELY! I eat fats every day so I totally agree with you. The KIND of fat you eat is SO important!

  • I love fats. I think it’s so important to emphasize just how great healthy fats are!
