Happy Friday! This morning I woke up and got in an excellent sweat session before work! I’m feeling completely energized to tackle this work day! Love that feeling!
Before I go in to my GNU Bar review, I wanted to send you over to Lauren’s blog to read an alternate perspective on the Michelle Obama Shake Shack order. I added a lengthy response and I would love for you to share YOUR thoughts on Lauren’s viewpoint! Thanks! GO HERE!
Last week I was sent a huge box of fiber filled snack bars from GNU Foods.
Gnu Foods is a small company founded in 2004, whose philosophy is as follows:
“Real health makes us feel good inside and out, physically and emotionally. Returning to real health, feeling good the way nature intended—that’s what Gnu Foods is all about.
We’re dedicated to creating Food that Works.™ Processed foods tend to have all the “goodness” squeezed out of them and many contain additives which simply aren’t what our bodies were designed for. The result: an obesity epidemic in America, even among our children, as well as soaring rates of heart disease, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes.
Gnu Foods is what your body was made for.”
I really enjoyed these bars! I’ve tried every flavor and have loved them all! For a complete list of nutrition facts and ingredients go to the GNU Foods Shop! They are vegan too!
My favorite flavor was the Banana Walnut Bar. It tastes just like banana bread!! YUM! If you are in need of a quick snack when in a bind…these are a great option! I found they make outstanding pre-workout fuel too!
Ingredients: “Gnu High Fiber Blend™ (whole rolled oats, organic whole wheat flour, wheat bran, organic kamut, psyllium, flax, millet), chicory root inulin, fruit juices, rice dextrins, apples, canola oil, walnuts, rice, plums, bananas, wheat protein isolate, natural flavors, baking powder.”
Nutrition Facts: 140 calories, 4 g Fat (0 g sat., 0 g trans), 40 mg sodium, 0 mg cholesterol, 12 g fiber (9 g soluble fiber, 3 g insoluble fiber), 30 g carbohydrate, 8 g sugar (almost 4:1 ratio of carbs to added sugar…NOT BAD!!), 4 g protein
If you are interested in sampling the GNU Bars, you can find them at your local health food store OR Giant Eagle Grocery Chains.
OR you can try entering the GNU Foods Sweepstakes. The lucky winners will win a free year’s supply of Gnu Bars and a Gnu Foods’ Prize Pack. You can enter here: http://www.facebook.com/GnuFoods?sk=app_28134323652
Hope each and every one of you has a fabulous weekend! Be healthy!

I love Gnu bars…they are tasty little things. They are a little to fiber packed for the husband…haha…but that just means more for me! ha!
Hi Erin, scared to post here. Melissa, who commented on my site, I think summarized it really well. I think everyone took my comments about Mrs Obama personally as if I was telling them not to eat a burger and, as someone said above, “policing” them. That’s not the case and many of my clients eat meals like Mrs Obamas. However, my reaction was based on her platform and the children and families needing her direction. In NYC, a visit to a public pool in the summer is beyond upsetting. Every child is overweight. I loved the debate and love that nutrition professionals and others can offer their 2 cents, as you did, and try to see where we can learn from each other. Many nutritionists looked at things through an eating disordered lens versus perhaps the best choice for childhood obesity.
Happy to talk GNU bars, they’re great for those who don’t have wheat/gluten issues. Enjoy your stash and look forward to disagreeing and learning more from each other in the future. I tried to reply to most comments, hopefully I did to yours- it was a good one.
Very interesting conversation around a powerful topic. Truthfully, I can see both sides, but I tend to go with all things in moderation. For me that’s a pass here and there for my favorite “junk” foods. I can’t pass up a big plate of fries once in a blue moon. I’ll have to look into these bars if, if they are affordable, it’s nice to have something quick in my gym bag.
I just got a sample as well! I am doing a review on them this week. Too funny!
I am loving them!
I never saw those bars before!
Goung to check out her thoughts now…
I’ve been looking for a new granola like bar to try. Thanks, hopefully they have them at Whole Foods!
I used to eat these bars regularly and loved them! I’m hoping Gnu will come out with a wheat-free flavor some day soon! Thanks for linking us to Lauren’s site…I’m on my way over there now!
I have been seeing these GNU bars around but still haven’t tried it. I bet I would like the banana flavor too!
I also love the banana flavor! The chocolate ones are OK, but not my favorite.
I love the banana bread odawalla bar so I bet I would LOVE that banana walnut bar!! Thanks for the tip!
Have a wonderful weekend Erin!
Mm, love the banana walnut bar! I actually found them at Marshall’s!
Okay I just read Lauren’s blog post and it made me so angry that I couldn’t bring myself to post on her blog for fear of really offending her. But honestly WHO made her the FOOD POLICE!?!?
Interesting point of view on Laurens page. I still agree with you though! I’ve never tried a GNU bar but i’ve picked them up and browsed before
I really like the GNU bars but they are super expensive! The chocolate brownie is my favorite so I’ll splurge and grab one once in a while.
Congrats on the workout
Haven’t tried those bars but they look awesome!! Off to enter the contest! Thanks for sharing <3
