Spread the Health! PART I

Health. It’s a huge priority in my life. It’s such a big priority that I spend most of my day reading and learning about up and coming nutritional topics. I’m always trying to challenge myself to learn new things in the area of wellness because I just LOVE health.

I love health SO much that I literally dedicated my career to helping others understand what it means to be healthy. I want YOU to know what I know, so that you can go out in this world and make wise choices at the grocery store, at restaurants, or that backyard BBQ. I also want any knowledge you learn from me to be spread around to your family, friends, and even co-workers. Let them know what you know!!

 Unfortunately, it saddens me how little this happens, especially with ladies (no offense). 

It is all too often that I see families where the wife and/or mother is in peak physical condition OR always trying a new diet, but then her husband and/or children are overweight or just plain unhealthy.

Why would you want yourself to be healthy, but not your entire family? Why is it okay for your husband or child to eat French fries and burgers, but you wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole? Why would you let your husband finish YOUR meal after he’s already consumed a day’s worth of calories in his OWN entree?

Why are we, as women, only worried about ourselves?

If this sounds familiar, keep reading.

  • It’s time to STOP using your husband or children as your personal garbage can.
  • It’s time to STOP keeping snack-y “junk foods” in the house because your kids eat them.
  • It’s time to STOP living vicariously through your husband and children because YOU are the one who really wants the ice cream or burger.
  • And it’s time START getting your WHOLE FAMILY healthy!

I want us in this "health thing" together!

  • Such an interesting post – thank you. I struggle with this issue as I don’t want to impose my views and preferences on my partner, and given he is already quite thin, I don’t want to have him cut anything out of his diet. But I do wish he didn’t eat a Big Mac a week, and I do wonder what those chocolate biscuits he enjoys contain. I try to think of everything in moderation though, and work on giving him vegetables and healthy dinners and trust that the things he enjoys (which are in moderation, he’s not into excess) will work themselves out.

  • This is great! My husband eat’s very similar to me, but he does indulge more with breakfast and snacks and he doesn’t always choose whole grains!

  • I’ll be tuned in for sure!!! My husband is definitely a garbage can!

  • It’s definitely a struggle to get everyone on board to changing their health and being better not only for themselves but for their family. Usually seeing one person change is enough for the other members of the family, but sometimes it isn’t and it becomes a fight to try and motivate them!

    What a great post. My family growing up had an abundance of junk food(like a ton!) However, we also had a 2 acre garden so we ate alot from it. My brothers and I were very active, and never even a little overweight. In our house my mom NEVER bought low sugar, low fat…we ate all the real stuff(southern foods). Now, my Dad since he’s unable to run like he did is overweight. My mom has lost 30 pounds due to eating healthy and exercising(something se never did in her life). But she still buys so much junk for my dad. It makes me so mad!! My Dads in good health, but his diet is horrible. I just wish my mom would say “WE are going to get healthy together. :)

  • Wow, I’ve never thought of this before. But I guess it makes sense when I stop and think about it. I’ve seen women do this very thing. Not a problem for us, though, Christopher and I eat the same for the most part. Well, unless there is pizza involved… then I have no restraint. :P

  • Sounds a bit like my parents. Although my mom cooks very healthy, she still bakes treats for my dad all the time. There are also candy jars all over there house. My dad wants to lose weight but it’s hard to resist all the yummy stuff. My mom (for some strange reason :) ) can resist it all.

  • I love this post! I was always mad at my mom for not letting me eat Cookie Crisp cereal or Dunkaroos for snacks, but I don’t blame her anymore. Your kids will definitely forgive you!

  • Well said. I drag my husband along with all my healthy eating. He can choose what he eats, of course, but I’m so happy he chooses to eat healthy, most of the time, with me.

  • Ugh, I wish you weren’t right. It’s true, though. My husband is very set in his ways and he tells me that it’s his body, he can eat what he wants. Because I think pressuring people to change can actually encourage them to NEVER change, I try not to give him too hard a time. I know someday it will become important to him, but hopefully before it’s too late. With my dad, however, I am always riding him. He needs help changing and doesn’t have the knowledge to do so, and so I try to help with that. I think with women (at least for me, as an RD), I don’t want to argue with them about what fad diet they’re on and why it’s bad. People can get very aggressive about their choices and feel as though it’s none of my business. Which, maybe it’s not…but it’s only because I care that I would ever say anything in the first place.

  • I can’t wait for tomorrow’s post. My boyfriend does try to be a tad bit healthier because of me, but he DOES still indulge in fast food. It makes me sad :(

  • This is tough. I eat 80% healthy and my hubby eats maybe 50% healthy (or lower). Now that we have baby on the way, I’m concerned that his bad habits will be going into our child’s and I refuse to let that happen. I also want my hubby to be a good role model of healthy eating and right now he’s not. Oye.

    I make my boyfriend eat everything I do – Healthy stuff!! When we splurge though we splurge together but only once a week (IF that)

  • Great post…can’t wait to read tomorrow – I personally dont understand why women eat SO healthy but then let their husbands eat SO unhealthy! It’s crazy to feed someone like that you you love so much — :-)

  • Looking forward to tomorrow’s post. I don’t have the kids part but I do have the husband and I can say that I try to influence his habits to be healthy, like mine. But, if I have learned ANYTHING, it’s that, that person needs to want to be healthy for him or herself. I agree with stocking the house with healthy stuff and encouraging healthy decisions bu,t that’s not always enough. It wasn’t enough for me until I changed my own mind about being healthy. My husband is a relatively healthy person but I’ve been unsucessful in getting him to exercise more in addition to the healthy eating. I’ve finally come to terms that it’s his decision, not mine.

  • I encourage my boyfriend to eat healthy but at the end of the day he is his own keeper. I can’t force him to change his lifestyle if he doesn’t want to. I can cook healthy meals, bring healthy food into the house and educate him but ultimately as an adult he will do want he wants and I don’t feel its my responsibility to continuously force the same issue.

    Children are a different story that I can’t really weigh in on because I don’t have them however I do feel parents should make healthy food choices for their children.

    The other day I actually forced my husband to choke down a fish oil pill. Haha!
