Would You Dress Up As Anna-Rexia?

Check out the new trend in Halloween costumes this year; women dressing up as “Anna-Rexia.” This costume has been causing some controversy, as it is mocking anorexia, a very serious mental illness. I don’t think many people would think dressing up as a cancer patient was comical, so why is this any different? Just curious what my readers thought of the costume!? Happy Friday!

  • It’s disgusting! I’m actually really shocked that this has been made! :(

  • more like booborexia, sorry. I think it’s in poor taste but agree with Gina- most women’s halloween costumes are. To me, she looks like the Hooters skeleton and wouldn’t think anorexia unless she mentioned it. It will not be my costume but also not too bothered by this.

  • This is disturbing. I don’t know why someone would think this was a good idea.
    Definitely crosses the line.

  • Reading all of these comments is pretty interesting.
Even as a former anorexic, this doesn’t offend me a whole lot. However, I will admit it’s very difficult to offend me. I do think it’s stupid, and yet another excuse to make a costume that allows women to show their chests. The good thing is that no one knows the costume is supposed to be an anorexic person, as the name doesn’t appear anywhere. Of course now that it’s been publicized, it’s a different story.

  • Wow that is absolutely terrible! I’m totally disturbed by this!

  • Well, let’s begin by examining the origin of said costume. A plastic bag from a party store? Not necessarily the source for ‘taste’. Ya know? That being said, my first thought was to laugh. I thought it was pretty stupid but also kinda funny…obviously in bad taste…but I am a fan of making fun of stuff. Comedy is tragedy plus time. So, if it was worn in jest by someone who conquered her struggle, it might actually be sort of thought provoking.

    Yeah, no, it’s pretty bad.

  • You have *got* to be kidding me! What kind of person sat down and said, “I think we need a new kind of “sexy” Halloween costume. The dirty cop and sexy nurse is played out. I know! Anna-Rexia. Anorexia. Get it?!” It’s a sad testament to where we stand as a society when we not only take a debilitating mental illness and not only try to poke fun at it, but also make it sexy. What the hell?

  • there’s nothing funny about it at all. Maybe people find the name funny but the condition is serious and it’s sickening to think people would walk around like that. I’m horrified.

That is absolutely ridiculous, it’s sad that the producer of that thinks it’s funny… He is without a heart. Anorexia is more dangerous than many deadly diseases out there. Absolutely ridiculous!!!

  • That is disgusting. I mean, is that not as bad as mocking someone with cancer, depression, diabetes, etc.? What is wrong with this world???

  • That is so horrible….really, I don’t even have words for it…

I have to agree, no one dresses up as a cancer patient (ok someone out there probably does to be controversial). While I, personally am not offended by it and have to admit it is clever, I wonder… what kind of person would actually wear this costume and why? There are so many cool costumes out there.

    This just leaves me puzzled.

  • Hey, Erin and readers,

Over the weekend, I put together a little nutrition website where you can find out how many calories are in over 1000 different common food items. All the data is from the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, so it should be 100% accurate. It’s early days, yet, so the site is pretty basic, but I think it’s useful.

Anyways, I was wondering if — assuming you find the site useful — you could give the site a shout out on your blog or even just on something like twitter. It would be super helpful.

I figure — worst case scenario — I’ve helped a couple people make an informed eating decision and — base case scenario — I’ve helped a couple thousand do the same thing.

As far as the costume goes, it’s in poor taste, sure, but not worth getting upset over. Also, you have to remember that, while the costume might be inappropriate, counter-measures such as banning it would be a violation of your First Amendment right to freedom of expression.

    Definitely in poor taste.

I definitely am against this!!! Wh would even come up with something this horrible?

  • I’m not all that angry about it. It’s dumb. I think it’s just not funny.

  • It crosses the line and is disgusting to me.

  • I’ve seen similar things like this before.

I had a friend once buy one of those kid’s skeleton costumes (she was small) and go around introducing herself as Mary Kate Olsen.

Yeah, it’s controversial. No, I’d never dress up in it. But I think it may just hit a nerve with us more because of our strong interest in healthy living. There are quite a few things people dress up as to stir up a reaction. I just look the other way…

  • Ugh. I don’t get why this is a costume. Not funny at all.

  • K

Wow. That is kind of horrific..

  • I think it’s in poor taste to begin with having half her boobage showing, but it take impropriety to a whole new level with the name!

  • This is terrible. It makes me sick to think that someone came up with this. As someone who has suffered from disorders like this it is hurtful, I do not like it at all.

  • I saw this the other day and thought it was kind of tasteless. It makes light of something serious. Creative? Yes…but I think it crosses the line.

  • That’s terrible. I have an idea. Why don’t I dress up as MS? Wouldn’t that be funny?

  • This is beyond disturbing and who the heck thought of this! It was probably some overweight, unattractive, miserable male…Very upsetting that someone would design this. Anorexia is a disease and something that should not be ridiculed. I could go on forever about this, but it’s Friday and time to enjoy the weekend!
